Integrity

I heard a podcast recently that was talking about George Lucas and his making of Star Wars. It was an interesting recounting of the challenges he had to overcome to sell his idea to the studio. The movie originally pitched as a “space opera” quickly evolved into something way different. As Mr. Lucas got more clear in his vision and his ultimate goal he was steadfast in his commitment to deliver the kind of film he, as a 7-year-old boy, would have wanted to see.

At multiple points, the studio heads tried to persuade George to change his vision and adapt his film into something more commercially acceptable. Something that resembled more of what the studios had been cranking out for years.

Lucas was committed to doing something completely different.

He stayed true to the film he had dreamed up in his head. Despite everyone telling him it would be an epic failure, he stayed on his path to deliver one of the greatest films ever made. Even when the odds were stacked against him and his integrity and intelligence were being called into question, he never wavered. Like Luke Skywalker, as he dreamed of flying through the stars, he refused to buckle to anyone. The Dark Side of the movie industry would not turn him.

How many of us would be able to do the same? How many of us would stay whole in our vision and undivided in our purpose? Whether it be an idea, a stance, or simply how we function and operate in the world?

Will you maintain your integrity no matter what?

Clearly, Mr. Lucas stands as an example of what is possible when you do
